Extended Rayleigh Damping Model

چکیده

In dynamic analysis, frequency domain analysis can be used if the entire structure is linear. However, time history analysis is generally used if non-linear elements are present. Rayleigh damping has been widely used in time history response analysis. Many articles have reported the problems associated with this damping and suggested remedies. A basic problem is that the frequency area across which the damping ratio is almost constant is too narrow. If the area could be expanded while incurring only a small increase in computational cost, this would provide an appropriate remedy for this problem. In this study, a novel damping model capable of expanding the constant frequency area by more than five times was proposed based on the study of a causal damping model. This model was constructed by adding two terms to the Rayleigh damping model and can be applied to the linear elements in the time history analysis of a non-linear structure. The accuracy and efficiency of the model were confirmed using example analyses.

Initial vs. Tangent Stiffness-based Rayleigh Damping in Inelastic Time History Seismic Analyses

In the inelastic time history analyses of structures in seismic motion, part of the seismic energy that is imparted to the structure is absorbed by the inelastic structural model, and Rayleigh damping is commonly used in practice as an additional energy dissipation source. It has been acknowledged that Rayleigh damping models lack physical consistency and that, in turn, it must be carefully use...

Parameter Identification in a Generalized Time-Harmonic Rayleigh Damping Model for Elastography

The identifiability of the two damping components of a Generalized Rayleigh Damping model is investigated through analysis of the continuum equilibrium equations as well as a simple spring-mass system. Generalized Rayleigh Damping provides a more diversified attenuation model than pure Viscoelasticity, with two parameters to describe attenuation effects and account for the complex damping behav...

Subzone based magnetic resonance elastography using a Rayleigh damped material model.

PURPOSE Recently, the attenuating behavior of soft tissue has been addressed in magnetic resonance elastography by the inclusion of a damping mechanism in the methods used to reconstruct the resulting mechanical property image. To date, this mechanism has been based on a viscoelastic model for material behavior. Rayleigh, or proportional, damping provides a more generalized model for elastic en...

Gyrostatic extensions of the Howard-Krishnamurti model of thermal convection with shear

The Howard & Krishnamurti (1986) low-order model (LOM) of Rayleigh-Bénard convection with spontaneous vertical shear can be extended to incorporate various additional physical effects, such as externally forced vertical shear and magnetic field. Designing such extended LOMs so that their mathematical structure is isomorphic to those of systems of coupled gyrostats, with damping and forcing, all...

A critical look into Rayleigh damping forces for seismic performance assessment of inelastic structures

Rayleigh damping forces are commonly introduced in the numerical simulations of nonlinear structures run to assess structural performance in case of an earthquake. Their purpose is to account for energy dissipative mechanisms not otherwise explicitly represented in the model. When caused by interactions between the structure and its surrounding environment, energy dissipation is external to the...
